Kyiv regards Poland's plans to put Lviv views on new passports as unfriendly step - Foreign Ministry

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has handed a note of protest to Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Jan Pieklo over Warsaw's plans to imprint images of a chapel situated in the Lychakiv Cemetery in Ukraine's Lviv on the pages of Poland's new passports.

The Polish ambassador was summoned to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on August 7, the ministry's press service said late on Monday. Pieklo was then given a note "expressing a strong protest against the intentions of Poland's Interior Ministry and Administration to imbed an image featuring the rotunda chapel situated near the Polish war graves in the Lychakiv Cemetery in the city of Lviv in the pages of the new passport of Poland," the ministry said.

"Ukraine regards such intents as an unfriendly step, which adversely affects the development of the strategic Ukrainian-Polish partnership," it said.

Evaluating historical events is the business of historians, it said.

"Ukraine opposes politicizing specific historical facts to the detriment of the development of the mutually beneficial strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Republic of Poland," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
